Meet Jo Huxel

I started teaching with the Seattle Agility Center in 2015 after moving from sunny Cape Town, South Africa to the Seattle area. Growing up in Germany my family always had dogs (and horses, cats, pigs, sheep, goats..) and I couldn't imagine my life without them. At the moment two dogs, Cassia my German Shorthaired Pointer and Zuki my Rhodesian Ridgeback, live with me and my husband.

In South Africa I became involved in Search and Rescue and me and Cassia certified as an air-scent Search and Rescue team with K9 SARA WC. We're still involved in Search and Rescue and are now training with NDSD. I'm fascinated by a dog's scenting ability and love to practice and continue to learn about detection dog training. Cassia, Zuki and I are having fun in conformation and obedience/Rally obedience, we enjoy doing tricks, retrieving, scent games and you will often find us hitting the trails either hiking or mountain biking.

Another favorite activity for my dogs is doing K9 dexterity parkour - much like in the human sport of parkour we utilize obstacles we find in the environment to do fun tricks like balancing, jumping and crawling. Among other dog related activities I volunteered at The Underdog Project in Hout Bay, South Africa where at risk children and youth learn to clicker train shelter dogs.

I love facilitating puppy classes and teaching pet dog obedience and watch the relationship between dog and owner grow. While obtaining a master's degree in teaching German and doing extensive course work in counseling and facilitation I taught German at different schools and universities around the world. Coming from a teaching and facilitation background has helped me in engaging with my dog training clients and setting up productive and interactive sessions.
